What is The Engine?
The Engine opened its doors in June of 2017 to founders of early-stage companies working on disruptive technology. Founded by MIT, The Engine’s mission is to provide capital, resources, and comprehensive support to help founders build the next generation of world-changing companies. We recently moved into a new 155,000 SF building in Central Square, Cambridge in September 2022. Our building includes offices, meeting spaces, biology & chemistry laboratories, and maker/fabrication space.
Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and safety-minded individual to serve as the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Associate for the facility. The EHS Associate will work closely with The Director of Laboratory Operations and Safety and The Laboratory Operations Manager to ensure compliance with all relevant local, federal, and state requirements. The EHS associate will assist in the day-to-day implementation, review, and continuous improvement of the Safety Program at The Engine.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Routine inspections of the laboratory, maker, and fabrication spaces
  • Plans, organizes, schedules, and conducts inspections of facilities, work areas and equipment
  • Performs monthly life safety equipment inspections
  • Assist with risk analysis of workflows and provide feedback and corrective actions
  • Work with the Lab Director and Lab Manager to maintain and adhere to the Compliance Calendar
  • Assist with the development and tracking of relevant training and safety programs
  • Provide routine guidance on the management, storage, and disposal of hazardous and regulated wastes
  • Complete written reports of safety reviews
  • Maintain the facility’s Chemical Inventory System

Job Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in EHS or related life sciences, Biology or Chemistry
  • 1-3 years of experience in a lab environment
  • Project Management skills preferred
  • Clear written communication
  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
