Head of Genomics & Bioinformatics Job Description

Cellino Biotech, Inc. is an innovation- and value-driven, venture capital-backed biotechnology company that is pioneering a transformative platform to manufacture cell-based therapies. The company was founded by a team of interdisciplinary, entrepreneurial scientists and engineers with expertise in laser physics, biology, software development, optics, precision instrumentation, and business.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated computational biologist to lead initiatives aimed at establishing a best-in-class data analysis pipeline to characterize induced pluripotent stem cells established in Cellinio’s proprietary laser-driven cell culture automation platform. This newly developed role will report directly to the VP of Bioprocess with ample support from the VP of Data and Machine Learning. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing our research and development efforts, utilizing the latest technologies and methodologies in genomics and bioinformatics to help drive process decisions and to define a strategy for forward thinking quality control release criteria of iPSC products. This highly visible position will involve integration into a matrixed environment, working alongside R&D biologists, bioengineers, machine learning software engineers, and product development teams, to help drive Cellino’s mission.

Responsibilities:

● Develop and execute a comprehensive vision and strategy for the organization's genomics and bioinformatics programs in alignment with Cellino’s target product profile and quality control release strategy.

● Stay abreast of the latest advancements and trends in the field of functional genomics and bioinformatics, ensuring that Cellino’s ‘omics efforts remain at the forefront of scientific innovation.

● Lead the design and execution of genomics experiments, utilizing various sequencing technologies and analytical tools to generate high-quality data.

● Apply advanced bioinformatics methods to analyze and interpret complex genomic datasets, identifying relevant patterns, biomarkers, and genomic integrity.

● Implement best practices in data management and quality control to ensure accurate and reproducible results.

● Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, R&D, software engineering / machine learning, and quality control, to integrate genomics and bioinformatics findings into broader research efforts.

● Represent Cellino’s ‘omics capabilities and datasets to internal stakeholders, executive leadership, external partners, and regulatory bodies, as needed.

● Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, guidelines, and industry standards concerning genomics and bioinformatics data generation, storage, and sharing.

Qualifications:

● Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field.

● Proven experience (at least 5-7 years) in leading genomics and bioinformatics research projects in an academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology setting.

● Strong background in the following next-generation sequencing technologies:

○ Whole Genome

○ Exome

○ RNAseq

○ Single-cell

● Experienced with somatic variant calling, differential expression analysis, clonality analysis, quality control

● Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics (e.g., Python, R), cloud infrastructure (e.g. DNAnexus) and experience with relevant software (e.g Github, Docker) and tools (e.g. multiQC, trimmomatic, IGV, bamtools).

● Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities.

● Effective communication skills with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse non-bioinformatics audiences.

Nice-to-Have Skills and Background

● Validation of data pipelines in GxP environments and/or collaboration with quality teams for implementation of informatics datasets as part of clinical product testing regimes.

● Functional genomics of pluripotent stem cells or human cell & tissue products.

● Incorporation of NGS-based methods in place of compendial methods for the testing of cell-based therapies.
