THE ROLE:
The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for supporting new product introductions, volume production, designing manufacturing calibration and validation tests, and developing continuous improvements for assembly and test processes. This is a pivotal role to Volta’s operations group as the company continues to scale and grow. As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will be an instrumental member of a tightly knit team focused on commercializing a novel product within the genomics space. DAY TO DAY AND YEAR 1:
- Implement innovative designs and process improvements into manufacturing, driving the realization of product enhancements, scaled production, improved quality, and cost reductions.
- Develop test methods and protocols, perform validation activities and similar qualifications, and generate detailed technical reports.
- Emphasize quality and utilize a risk-driven approach to ensure required steps are taking in manufacturing to reduce defects and eliminate escapes.
- Implement DFM and PFMEA methodology and statistical process controls to set up reliable, low defect manufacturing lines.
- Generate and revise detailed component and assembly drawings as needed.
- Design, document, troubleshoot and implement new and upgraded equipment/fixturing for Production.
- Participate in supplier selection, qualification, and Non-Conformance and CAPA efforts.
- Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Work with external vendors and supply partners to support hardware delivery per production schedules.
- Influence make vs. buy decisions and work with external vendors to augment internal capabilities.
- Prototype fixtures using 3-D printers, lathe, drill press, band saw, etc
Within 3 months you’ll…focus on familiarizing yourself with the existing manufacturing processes, products, and equipment. You will conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify opportunities for improvement in areas such build and test efficiency and quality enhancement.
By 6 months you’ll…implement continuous improvement programs into manufacturing to reduce cycle time, improve quality, and reduce cost. You’ll establish a robust quality assurance framework with associated tests and records to ensure stringent adherence to quality standards. You’ll have become and expert troubleshooting and resolving manufacturing issues and spearheading collaboration with external suppliers in support of timely production.
At 12+ months you’ll…drive significant process improvements that result in scaled production, enhanced quality, and reduced production costs. You’ll foster a culture of continuous improvement within the manufacturing team and take a leading role optimizing manufacturing operations to meet growing customer demand.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 5- 7 years of related experience in a manufacturing or operations role supporting production of hardware products, preferably capital equipment. Experience in highly engineered industries such as medical devices, biotechnology, semiconductor equipment, or robotics/automation is a plus.
- Degree in a relevant engineering field such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
- Experience generating and managing manufacturing documentation for commercially available hardware products (BOMs, drawings, quality records, test records, etc.)
- Proficiency with Onshape and/or SolidWorks modeling, engineering drawing generation, GD&T. DFM, tolerance analysis, and tooling design.
- Experience in reading and interpreting engineering drawing, specifications, and statistical sampling plans.
- Experience using dimensional/visual QC inspection equipment, gage pins, calipers, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and train production personnel.
This is a full-time position that requires a significant amount of in-person work and collaboration onsite at our Seaport Office in Boston, MA. If you are unable to relocate or commute to the Boston MA area, this role won't be a match.
